This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a special education teacher in Brooklyn, NY, I have observed that the majority of my students struggle to keep up with the pace of the general education curriculum. As we know, the pressure and mental exhaustion of trying to maintain the same level as their peers, or having the feeling of being "different," can take a significant toll on the students' well-being.

To address these challenges, I want to provide effective strategies to keep my students excited, motivated, and engaged in their learning.

Providing snacks will allow my students to have one less thing to worry about. Hunger can play such a factor in people, especially our young. Seeing them struggle cognitively from the material is hard, but knowing that hunger plays a part in it too is a weight I want to take off of them if I can. This simple gesture allows the students to look forward to a delightful treat, which can positively reinforce their efforts and progress.

By incorporating these techniques, I aim to create a supportive and engaging learning environment that caters to the unique needs of my special education students. This not only helps them overcome the difficulties they face but also fosters a sense of achievement and belonging within the classroom. The use of manipulatives, and SEL materials can also give them the opportunity to think critically about what they are learning and allow them to have the tools to help them concentrate.
