Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Emergent literacy has become a fundamental part in preparing our young learners for their continued school trajectory. We have been using environmental print to expose children to letter identification and sound production, and have noticed their engagement and pride. Children are now pointing out letters during our walks around the school and during their play. We also engage in read-alouds, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, where we continue emphasizing letter sounds and pointing out familiar letters. Children are starting to make connections with the initial sounds of words. We would love to continue fostering their current interest and engagement by providing our 3K littles with more literacy tools and materials.

Through the use of a CD player and audio books, children can continue strengthening their literacy skills.

Even though we have two read-alouds throughout the day, audiobooks will provide another opportunity for children to listen to speech sounds during their play. Additionally, since we have play centers, we think it is important for each center to have literacy components. The alphabet seashells will be a great addition to our sensory table. I can already imagine our children's excitement when they are able to dig and find letters hidden within the sand. The buildable letters will equally provide eagerness and enthusiasm. We have recently wrapped up our structures unit, where children practiced hammering, and they loved it! With this manipulative, children would be able to continue practicing that skill, but with a literacy twist.
