Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my preschool for all learners class, we work with three to four-year-olds with developmental delays and disabilities in a special education setting. During our daily schedule, we have teacher-led group activities and child-directed free choice play experiences that are individualized to each student’s abilities and needs.

My students come from a low-income background, many of them have experienced difficult situations and have a unique set of needs and abilities.

My classroom is a place where they are cared for, they have the opportunity to be themselves and express themselves freely, they are provided with meals. My students love hands-on material and visuals that inspire learning and curiosity. Unfortunately, sometimes it is difficult to provide them with all the help and material they need because of lack of resources.

My Project

Having the opportunity to obtain these resources will help my students engage in a variety of early literacy activities in small groups and in whole group instruction. The alphabet tubs will be used to help students connect the letters to the sounds, using real objects that the children can touch, feel and interact with. They will be able to independently explore different items in the tubs throughout the day. Other materials, such as the trace and write alphabet center, float and find alphabet bubbles, easy drop sponge painters, and the catch a letter magnetic learning center will be used for small group instruction to help my students recognize letters and how they are formed. These items will be available for my students in different centers. Letter stamps will be used to teach students how to spell their names and to explore letters during arts and crafts activities.

Having the opportunity to provide engaging materials and hands-on literacy centers that are developmentally appropriate will encourage and foster my students to explore their literacy skills while having fun and learning new skills.

My classroom is a place where every student has the opportunity to come to work toward specific goals that were set for them in their IEP’s, enjoy learning and exploring while working in the foundation of many skills like literacy. Donations to this project have the power to place learning opportunities in the hands of students with many needs and lack of resources.
