My Project

In today’s world, many students have little understanding of the harsh realities faced by individuals during times of war or the difficult journey of immigrants adapting to life in a new country. For those who have never experienced the threat of conflict or the anxiety of leaving behind everything familiar, it can be difficult to fully grasp the resilience, determination, and courage required to overcome such adversity. This lack of firsthand knowledge leaves a gap in students’ awareness and appreciation of the sacrifices made by millions who have fought for survival, safety, and opportunity in unfamiliar, and often unwelcoming, places. Exposing students to the stories of immigrants and war survivors offers them a vital opportunity to build empathy, cultural understanding, and a greater sense of global citizenship.

Hence, not only do these books promote cultural awareness and understanding but they also teach resilience and perseverance, empathy and compassion, social-emotional learning, and engaging students in memoirs and personal narratives.

"A Blessed Life" provides insights into the experiences of a Vietnamese immigrant, allowing students to understand the cultural and historical context of the Vietnam War, the impact of war on individuals and families, and the challenges faced by immigrants. This fosters empathy and a deeper appreciation for diverse cultural backgrounds, enhancing students’ global perspective. “The Distance Between Us" and "Living Beyond Borders: Growing Up Mexican in America" offer several significant benefits for students, particularly in building empathy, understanding cultural experiences, and developing critical thinking skills. These stories speak directly to 98% of my students' ethnicity, helping students develop a growth mindset and persistence in the face of their own challenges. These books can inspire them to connect their own lives to broader historical and cultural contexts, developing their critical thinking and writing skills.
