This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Project Description:

Help our high school students develop empathy and understanding by providing them with copies of Trevor Noah's memoir, "Born a Crime." This engaging and insightful book offers a powerful look into the complexities of race, identity, and resilience, making it an ideal tool for teaching compassion and fostering meaningful discussions.

Goal:

Our goal is to obtain copies of "Born a Crime" to support our curriculum and provide each student with their own book to read, annotate, and reflect upon. This will enable us to conduct in-depth analyses, group discussions, and empathy-building exercises that highlight the book's themes of overcoming adversity and understanding different perspectives.

How Students Will Learn to Alleviate the Suffering of Others:

Empathy-Building Discussions: Through guided classroom discussions, students will explore the hardships and injustices Trevor Noah faced during apartheid in South Africa. By examining his personal stories, students will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of systemic discrimination and the importance of empathy in addressing such issues.

Reflective Writing Assignments: Students will complete reflective essays and journal entries that prompt them to connect Noah's experiences to their own lives and communities. They will be encouraged to think critically about the ways in which they can support and uplift those who face similar challenges.

Measuring the Success of the Compassion Project:

Reflective Writing Assessment: The quality and depth of students' reflective essays and journal entries will be evaluated to gauge their ability to connect the themes of the book to real-world issues and their personal growth in empathy and compassion.

By integrating Trevor Noah's "Born a Crime" into our curriculum, we aim to equip our students with the skills and mindset to alleviate the suffering of others. We will foster a more compassionate and empathetic generation, capable of making meaningful contributions to their communities.
