My Students

I currently service special needs students in fifth grade, most of whom I have looped with from the 2020-21 school year. Some of them have specific learning disabilities, some have communication disabilities, and others suffer from attentional issues such as ADHD. Many of them are reluctant readers.

I have a pretty good book collection amassed, but I am hoping to take this wonderful opportunity to bolster my supply of high-interest books that will spark a love of (or at least an appreciation for) reading.

My Project

Thank you for considering my project. I am a special education teacher and I work with fifth-grade students who have a variety of learning disabilities. Many of them are reluctant and struggling readers.

My aim is to bolster my reading collection with books that will excite and inspire my students.

I want to offer them books that reflect who they are and what they look like. My aim is to introduce to them books about embracing diversity, inclusion, antiracism, and acceptance. I want them to learn to love, or at least appreciate, reading. I want them to find books they just cannot put down, books they ask to take home with them for the weekend, books they want to share with their friends. I want books we can read together as a group and make sense of together.

Also included on my wish list is a $100 gift card for Teachers Pay Teachers, which I could use to purchase targeted reading lesson plans that encourage inclusiveness, diversity, and the quest for antiracism.

Lastly, I am asking for a set of Must-Know Math skills books to help fill some of the learning gaps that were exacerbated by the pandemic and disproportionately affected students of color.

I humbly thank you!
