My students need a leveled classroom library of books they can read independently in class as well as borrow to read at home.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a very inquisitive and lively group of first graders! One of their favorite time of day is when I read aloud to them. Their eyes open wide with excitement and anticipation. They love to discuss the books with their teacher and peers. They love to “re-read” the stories I’ve read to them to each other. During independent reading, it warms my heart to hear reading independently using the strategies modeled for them during our read aloud time. We are on our way to becoming lovers of reading!
My Project
I am a first grade teacher at a community school in the South Bronx. Many of my students come from low income homes and quite a few live in the neighboring shelters. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have access to books on their reading level at home so in class is the only time that many of them read. Most are not excited about reading because they struggle to read. The books I chose will help me to create a classroom library that my students will be excited about and want to borrow books from for their daily reading. My goal is foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
