This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a public school in Elmhurst, Queens that serves a low-income population of over seventeen hundred students. This year, we are following a fully in person learning style as we go back into school, meaning that my students will have to learn to transition from learning on devices to using pencil and paper, and reading handheld books.

My students are sweet, determined, enthusiastic learners who have an up-to-date, high-interest library.

I want to foster the love of reading in my classroom by updating my classroom with newer books that my students are engaging.

My Project

One of my students' favorite periods is library because they get to have a chance to visit the school library and have opportunities to borrow books that are interesting and aren't widely accessible to them. However, they can only visit once every two weeks and borrow only one book at a time. Some of my students aren't able to visit an actual library and borrow books on their own time.

Many of the books in my classroom libraries are old and outdated.

My students frequently book shop for long periods of time and struggle to find books that they are interested in reading. I want to expand my library by adding books that are interesting to them. After learning at home for a year, many of my students have low reading stamina. One way to build reading stamina is by providing them with books that are engaging. Helping build their reading stamina will help them become stronger in reading when it comes to being exposed to different types of texts. My students have shown interest in these series of books and I would like to diversify my classroom library with them.
