My Students

In our high-poverty elementary school, I have 25 bright eyed and energetic first grade students in my class. There are 44 total first graders in the grade! Each of these curious minds come from varying backgrounds and nationalities. Despite the many challenges they face both inside and out of the classroom, they long to be a part of creative and meaningful learning experiences. Some of my students are learning English as their second language and others struggle due to learning disabilities.

I want my students to have the resources they need in order to be successful both inside and out of the classroom.

My class longs to hold new school supplies, but unfortunately many of their families cannot afford it. Nevertheless, the children come to school eager to learn and ready to persist throughout the school year.

My Project

My students are eager to read anything and everything! However, many of my English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities are struggling with our basic sight words and comprehension. While we practice as much as possible in the classroom, the children will soar through more books if there is more involvement with reading at home!

These materials that will be used for literacy game nights will foster the children's life-long love of reading!

With these materials, it is my goal to create a literacy game night for the kindergarten and first graders at my school. Parents will participate in a workshop explaining different reading strategies that we use in school and how they can support these skills at home. Next, I will set up stations with all of these games to show the parents how easy they are to be played and it can be a fun family game night at home! I would like the reproducible games to send home a kit with each family to practice. the other games I would love to have different families borrow each weekend based upon what the children need and are interested in.

These materials that will be used for literacy game nights will foster the child's life-long love of reading! My students will not only love the engaging experience, but be learning tons while having fun!
