Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Promise me you'll always remember ,you're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think - Christopher Robin to Pooh. This quote is what guides me to encourage my students, that despite the struggles they face, there lies within them the resiliency to succeed.

My 5th grade students come from diverse backgrounds and challenges.

Many live right where our school is located; a high poverty/crime area. Most walk to school on their own, and those that come by bus, are children of migrant workers that live at a "camp" that provides the basic shelter for them to live. What amazes me about our students, is that most come to school every day because it is their safe haven, but most importantly, because they and their families, value and recognize the importance of education. Because of this, I want to be able to provide them with the resources that will help them enter the 21st century of learning.

My Project

The resources that I am asking for are going to give my students the opportunity to become 21st century learners. The technology we currently use is minimal, when compared to schools in more affluent areas. We say we want our students to use technology in the classroom but that becomes difficult when the resources are not there. I want to give them the opportunity to use modern technology that other students may have easy access to. We are currently working on "engineering" projects that encourage designing, creativity and thinking skills as part of a STEM initiative. They work in teams, and having an IPAD and a camera will give them a chance to capture "live" what they're doing and seeing it firsthand using modern technology. Our future projects involve building a "community", a mouse-trap car and a robot. The car kits will help them with "getting started" and give them practice for building the "real thing". In the process, my hope is, they will feel like real engineers.

We are entering a world where technology surrounds us on a daily basis.

By donating and supporting this project, you will be giving my students a chance to be competitive in the learning process and in turn, fostering 21st century learners. They may still learn, but with these resources, they will no longer lack the technology that will make their learning experiences meaningful and applicable to the present age they live in. That in itself, will have a tremendous impact on my students!
