We are an inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. I teach both math and science. My class is an eclectic mix of students who are bilingual, over-age, accelerated, regular ed. and/or with special needs. Their academic abilities are as diverse as their personalities.
Last year, we were the only class in our building to complete a free trial of an amazing program called Formative Loop.
This program fills in the developmental holes my kids missed growing up. Right now, we are working on learning to find the halves of numbers mentally. Some of them had to go back to counters to physically split the number into two groups, but once it clicks they take off! The program evaluates progress in each skill, like finding halves of numbers, and then moves students to the next level when they are ready. Scores are entered into the program, and then an individualized practice page is printed for each child, as well as a homework page that is at their level. They must pass each activity to move on.
My Project
Last year, we had the highest growth of any grade in any subject in math. We only used a free trial of Formative Loop for two months, and had to triple the lessons to get everything in. We are looping (moving up to 5th grade together from 4th) and I can't think of a better tool to help them make another great leap. We need a subscription of $7 per student to use the program again. Formative Loop guarantees dramatic progress, and based on our experience last year with the free trial, we are absolute believers in this brilliant tool.
