My Students

We are an inner-city school that serves a population of 80% free and reduced lunch. 35% of our students are ELL (English Language Learners). Like most children, our students have various home situations.

Many of our students go home to empty apartments and houses.

For this reason, it is important to provide positive outlets for those children after school. The creation of an after-school golf club helps provide, not only a monitored safe place after school, but a chance to learn a game that most would never be exposed to in their daily lives. With the use of the nine core values from The First Tee, students get physical fitness, character education, and a safe place to spend those typically alone hours with other people.

My Project

More than 75% of my students go home to empty houses at the end of the school day. For this reason, I started an after school golf club for students in grades 3-6. Over the last two years the club has grown in popularity among kids and parents. With help from The First Tee of Indiana, my club has sets of clubs for the kids to use free of charge. Now we need to work on the efficiency and accuracy of the space we have to run our club.

Nothing beats the smile on a student's face the first time they hit a golf ball into the air.

The first question they always ask, "How far did I hit that?" It is always a guess and I make up an estimated answer. I would like to transform our open field at the back of our school into a more realistic driving range. To accomplish this I need the ability to measure accurately. With the use of the laser I can accurately set-up the range and help kids begin to estimate distances. Our storage space is limited in the school so the addition of a storage cabinet will help keep everything organized and picked up from my classroom.
