This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are a diverse group of little learners that come to school ready for new learning opportunities. For many, this year is their first experience on a school campus with groups of children. They are so excited to be back at school and have quickly adjusted to our new school norms. Though they faced many challenges during the school closures, they are growing in leaps and bounds!

My students are book loving, enthusiastic learners!

They love practicing their emergent reading in pattern books, and cannot pass up the chance to read any book by our favorite author Mo Willems. Yet, many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our classroom library to check out quality books. In fact, 84% of our school population qualifies for free or reduced lunch so, many families have difficulty providing books to their student.

My Project

My students have shown a LOVE for reading and they are eager for new quality books. These book sets will be used to enhance our classroom library. The phonics and emergent readers were chosen with my students levels in mind. They need books with patterned text to enable them to read independently.

With these new sets, my students will be able to choose books at their level to add to their independent reading bags.

They will use these books daily for independent and partner reading in the class. They will also be able to check out books to take home for reading practice with their families. This project will help my students reach the goal of reading more to grow into proficient readers.
