Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I reach at an inner city school in North Houston, Texas. 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and dinner (when they stay for after school programs).

These students are resilient and brilliant with so much to share with the world.

With your partnership, my students will have the resources needed to reach their highest potential!

Our school strives to do what is best for students through every action, every day.

My classroom is far from glamorous. The classroom environment communicates the value of education to students. That is why I strive to create a beautiful space possible and provide the best resources for my students.

Although the physical classroom environment many not be the best, our academics are incredibly strong. We are an A-rated school and have received many urban education awards for the programs that we provide.

Our scholars are among some the the best readers, writers, mathematicians, musicians, and historians in their age group. With programs likes these and spirits like theirs, each student at our school has a bright future.

My Project

One of my top goals as a reading teacher is to nurture a love of reading for my students. One way to do this is by providing books that they are excited to read! This project is full of books that my students have requested often, or I'm sure they'll love. I also made a point to select books that support students' mental health. Fifth grade is a time that many students are beginning to understand deeper issues in the world or even experience these issues in their own worlds.

By providing books that support students' understanding of emotions, I hope that they will develop a healthy view of mental health and learn to manage their emotions in healthy ways.

Many of the books selected also represent a wide range of identities. As much as I cultivate a love of reading for my students, my largest wish for my students is for them to be kind to others. I hope for all students to feel seen and welcomed in my classroom. This project will help build a classroom library that represents these goals.
