My Students

My students attend a small, rural school in Mid-Missouri. It's a very tight-knit and proud community, but there is also a lot of poverty present. In our district 75% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced price lunch. Some of them face day-to-day challenges such as lack of family support, not enough food at home, or other financial shortfalls.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, many families have been hit especially hard losing employment and income.

Despite struggles at home, my third grade students are well-mannered, hard-working, and expressive. At this point in their education they are becoming more curious, motivated, and are at the stage in their education where they are reading to learn.

My Project

I am requesting a wide variety of books so that my students will have a literacy-rich environment to grow their reading passions!

My third grade scholars have been expanding their passion for reading at an astonishing rate this year!

They have been working hard to fill in many gaps in fluency and comprehension, but more importantly, they have developed an avid appetite for all kinds of books. Unfortunately, the book resources that I have available to them in my classroom are fairly scant. I have some books that I ordered from the beginning of the year and a few left from the previous teacher whose room I occupy now...all of which the students have read through at this point in our school year.

While virtual library platforms are an option, nothing can really compare to the feeling of turning the actual pages of an exciting and interesting new book. It’s a kind of love affair that I want to keep cultivating in my students now, and students in years to come at Dixon Elementary.

A classroom library with more diverse reading options would help our 3rd environment to be more conducive to supporting the scholars' love of books and use of resources throughout the subjects. New books would give the scholars a variety of material to read, as well as expanding their reading interests. I have hand-picked an assortment of grade-level picture and chapter books that tie in with our curriculum as well as promote diversity, STEM, mindfulness, and creativity. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more! This classroom library will help my 3rd Graders grow stronger in their foundational reading skills and instill that lifelong love of reading. The materials that you support with my project will create a place in my classroom where students can love reading and read what they love!
