My Students

There is an old saying that "there is a first time for everything". In the case of my current learners, this is so true and I love it. As a special education teacher, we are taught to assist students with their deficits and to turn weaknesses into strengths. For some of my students, the reading portion is down to a science. They know how to do it and they love it. Now, they are attacking novels that are a bit higher than their peers. Coupled with that, they are beginning to learn the importance of self-appreciation.

We are less than eighty days away from several of my students' graduation from elementary school.

To continue to support their love of literature, I want to provide them with a few take away resources that will not only remind them of the importance of our time together, but to inspire a lifelong love for literature.

My Project

I am starting early in the graduation department for my fifth graders. While my plan is to create projects for field trips that will be memorable, I want to also be able to provide my graduates with books that can be used to further support their love of reading. These books will not only support their interests, the titles will support their love for reading.

The books that I've chosen inspire confidence, self-awareness and a love for literature.

These students, which consist of six girls and two boys, have interests in complicated texts with interested genres. My boys were the easiest this time around! There are only two in my fifth grade class and they are both into the new Spiderman, as well as Michael Jackson. For them, I chose the new Spiderman graphic novel, as well as a graphic novel for Michael Jackson. The great thing about graphic novels is that they encourage my boys to read. Using elements of comics that they are used to, they won't even realize that they are reading text to improve their reading levels.

With my girls, came the challenge. There are six in my graduating class and they have a range of reading interests. Each of my girls would benefit from Brown Girls Dreaming which addresses specific poems ranging from adolescence to adulthood. Black Girls Rock will remind students of the importance of representation. It is an ongoing message to my girls who are currently experiencing difficulties with accepting the skin that they are in, and being able to appreciate the diversity that is among them.

With graduation being less than eighty days away, we could really use your help with this project!
