I work primarily with students face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of these ninth graders are victims of trauma from low-income homes. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with rimeaningful learning experiences.
It is my hope that my students become life long readers.
One of the questions often discussed in my class is: How can reading change how we see ourselves? The world? Others?
My goal is for my students to increase their reading stamina and complexity of the books they choose for independent reading. The only way for students to improve their skills in reading is to read. Research has shown us that voluminous reading makes students better readers. With this in mind, my students participate in Reading (R)evolution. This program has them reading for the first ten minutes of English class each day.
According to Penny Kittle's Book Love, it has been proven that reading helps us to become more resilient as we navigate life's struggles.
Books call us to action, informing us about the world. Books offer intellectual stimulation, which in turn, helps us to infer, predict, wonder, solve problems, and develop empathy.
My Project
With this project, I hope to stock my classroom library with diverse, high-interest texts that help my students move up their reading levels and become lifelong readers and leaders. My students need access to engaging, relatable, and age-appropriate books. Students will use these texts to set independent reading goals.
Having the texts they need at their fingertips will increase the level of student-to-student discourse within the classroom and promote a positive culture of literacy.
Studies show that voluminous reading of diverse texts not only increases reading stamina, comprehension, and vocabulary acquisition, but helps students to develop empathy. A rich classroom library will add a positive culture of literacy that will prepare these freshmen for high school, college, and beyond.
