My Students

I teach middle school students in the north east Los Angeles area. I work specifically with students with IEPs who have learning disabilities. Many of our students are also designated as Long Term English Learners who are struggling to meet the literacy demands necessary to reclassify. Over 90% live below the poverty line and meet the requirements for free or reduced lunch.

Unfortunately, along with these difficulties, far too many of our students come to us below grade level in reading.

Some students are reading as low as first or second grade level. Though many struggle academically however, they are full of life and creativity and have big dreams for their futures!

My Project

My students, many of whom read below grade level, need books and magazines that are accessible to them while keeping them engaged. One of the hardest things is to find materials for middle school students who have been struggling readers that are not demeaning or embarrassing for them. Nonfiction articles, such as those found in magazines and graphic novels are the perfect fit!

Providing ample reading material for my students with disabilities that will keep them motivated to continue growing in their reading will take us a long way towards our reading goals.

When students find that reading is both interesting and fun, they are on the path towards lifelong reading and learning.
