My Students

My students are excited, enthusiastic kids who are looking for a reason to read. They are interested in reading about relationships and struggles of fitting in, the normal eighth grade topics. They prefer books that are in a fantasy setting or in some sort of urban setting, both of which they seem to able to really connect with.

My students are struggling readers and really need a classroom community of readers to help them see the benefit of reading, even if reading is hard.

My kids would benefit from hundreds of books staring them in the face as an encouragement to the new worlds that await them.

My Project

The recent research shows that students who are reading below grade level can only increase their reading skills by increasing the amount of words they read. It makes sense and is fairly obvious, but there is so much more that goes into helping students who don't read or who struggle to read to actually read. I am asking for copies of ten different books like the Watchmen, the Graveyard Book and Proxy and four complete series of books like Among the Hidden and The Testing Trilogy to create a community of readers in my classroom. Students will select, read and discuss their books.

An environment of reading is needed.

A culture of sharing the passion of reading is crucial to creating readers. Allowing students the opportunity to see that people read all the time and reading is fun is really the key to increasing their literacy skills.

This project will put a step into the right direction for that ultimate goal.

Mr. Fleming Spring Creek Community School Grades 6-8
