My Students

“It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.” - Oscar Wilde Students are made to read what is in our curriculum and what their parents think is good for them, but how many actually enjoy it?

My students are a diverse and eclectic bunch of third graders of mixed ability that continue to surprise and impress me each day they show up craving knowledge, despite any challenges they face.

They look different, speak different languages, enjoy different hobbies, but all show up to school every day to be engaged and challenged. I owe it to them to bring the same enthusiasm in my teaching and dedication to building their love of reading so that it continues after they leave my classroom - so I let them choose the books they WANT to read. I believe 2nd and 3rd grade are where students really start to figure out who they are and what their interests are, as I see it every day. I can see that the group I have this year has an affinity for books about science, fairy tales, graphic novels, and characters that they can relate to. As a former struggling reader I want to show them that getting lost in a book is one of the most magical feelings in the world and truly changes you.

My Project

Our classroom has many books that I watch my students pass over every day. Being a Title I school, we do not always have the best materials. Books that are dusty, torn, outdated, and 'uninteresting' are ignored. Yes, the classics are so because they are great but what if you do not want to read a classic because you hate reading in general? This is the issue I am seeing and it stops here! I tell my class every day that if they do not like reading it is only because they haven't found the RIGHT book yet. These books will fill their book bins and baggies and they will be able to utilize the skills taught within the curriculum on the books they choose to read independently. These books will also be used in guided reading groups, book clubs, and for re-vamping the art of reading for pleasure. Reading interesting and student chosen texts helps boost fluency, comprehension, confidence and creates lifelong lovers of reading. Please help my students to find a love for reading!

A large number of students do not have the luxury of having books to read at home and rely only on the book baggies they take home from the library at school. This is a shame, and the number can decrease with amazing opportunities such as this. Your donation makes all the difference for kids who deserve the chance to be captivated by a book that might transform their lives.
