My Students

As my students gain momentum in their reading, they are in search of engaging books that capture their imaginations and make them fall in love with reading!

My class is a co-taught first grade class serving students with special needs and general education students.

I watch my students come alive as they are exposed to different genres and levels of books. My school is a turnaround school phasing out a failing school, and despite having students enter below grade level, the students have made tremendous progress in their reading and are working towards grade level proficiency.

My Project

As the students have cracked the code for decoding text and are able to read higher levels of books, I want them to discover the joy of reading through fun, engaging texts that are appropriate for their new reading levels. I have requested books like Biscuit Takes a Walk, There Is a Bird On Your Head!, and Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride. Students will be able to read these books in class during our reading workshop time and borrow them to take home and share with their families.

By targeting their zone of proximal development, the students can simultaneously become better readers and develop life long reading habits.

Unfortunately, a lot of books at these early reading levels are written to highlight phonics patterns and not to ignite students' imaginations imaginations. By filling our classroom library with these fun, engaging books, my hope is that every student will develop a passion for reading that they will carry with them well beyond first grade.
