My Students

My goal for each child: to find a book that they LOVE. The best feeling is when a child tells you that they stayed up late to read a book. To help encourage this love of reading, students need books where they see themselves in the main characters - and to see that the characters made it out alright

Reading is the key to understanding and experiencing the world.

Unfortunately, many of my students only experience the turmoil of their every day worlds. These students face a variety of obstacles and just coming to school each day is something to be proud of; they are hard working kids who are looking for a brighter future.

My Project

This school year, the goal is to bring each student closer to reading at or above grade level. To do this, students will be reading independently more than ever before. For this to work, reading cannot seem like a task; I want them to experience the genuine joy of falling in love with a book, learning something about life, learning something about themselves, and feel proud knowing that they finished.

When students see themselves in a book, it doesn't only create genuine interest in the text - it allows students to see that everything can work out.

My students need positive role models and positive influences; books can supply this. It can give them the life lessons and life experiences that they otherwise may not have access to.
