My Students

Do you remember what is was like the first time you read a book you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met authors like Veronica Roth and Suzanne Collins.

I am a middle school reading teacher in a rural Iowa town.

My students include 5th through 7th graders and, though each are unique, my students exhibit the pillars of character. I have been privileged to build positive relationships and want nothing more than for my students to develop a love for reading.

My Project

I strongly believe in providing students choice over what they read. In our reading class, we do not use the traditional basal readers. Instead, my students engage in authentic reading. As I build relationships with my students, I am able to draw out what interests and entices them. It is important for me to provide relevant and highly-appealing books for my students to read. Our class is also beginning a reading process known as Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). CSR allows students to work together in student-led groups and read nonfiction, engaging texts. In order to provide them with interesting, age-appropriate, and relevant articles, I have requested subscriptions to TIME for Kids and Scholastic Scope magazines.

With the demands placed on education and our Leaders of Tomorrow, I have a priority to provide students with rigorous and relevant text and authentic reading experiences.

Your donation will help to support my classroom vision. I see students pouring over text and engaging in lively discussions and deep thinking. These experiences are how our students begin to rise and succeed in education...and in life.
