Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an ICT first grade class with the most interesting and curious students I have ever encountered. Each student brings their interests, ideas, and talents to the class to expose and teach others. Some of the strong interests in the class include, but are not limited to: art, music, baking, decorating, science and MATH. My students are fun-loving, curious, creative, resilient, thoughtful and kind.

Many students are feeling defeated by remote learning because they do not have sufficient materials to complete assignments at home.

The assignments become abstract for the students when they should be concrete. This makes the work extremely difficult. At this age, students really need supplies and materials to learn, engage in and solidify concepts. Even with the distance and lack of materials, this group of students still try their very best and continue to show up for remote learning lessons.

Every student loves learning although resources at home are few. Students and families have gotten really creative with paper to recreate materials and resources. This just speaks to the dedication of the students and parents in my class. Seeing my students gives me the strength to endure during this difficult time. They are my motivation!

My Project

Distance learning is so totally different from regular school. I'm aware that the amount of screen time will have an impact on my students long-term. That's why I would like to supply them with some non-screen activities and resources that they can use to support with learning new concepts while fostering creativity.

I have picked out a few things I think my students would benefit from both academically and creatively.

You may have noticed that many of my materials are centered around math and that's because math has been the passion of this group since I met them in September!

We'll be learning how to tell time, count money and the differences between 2-D and 3-D shapes. I believe the pattern block set will allow students to learn their shapes, as well as create unique designs. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see what they create!
