Dr. Seuss wrote, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go!"
I love this quote because it speaks perfectly to my goal as an educator. I want my students to experience the fullness of life through the gift of literature.
My school is located in a low income neighborhood.
All students receive free lunch due to the economic backgrounds of the families we serve. Students are constantly facing instability in housing and family situations, and many students see school as their "safe place."
I believe that my students are more than where they come from, though. Each of my students desire to know more and become better each day. Though their experiences may be limited, they are constantly eager to ask questions to learn more about the world they live in.
My Project
I am requesting support to receive books that I believe will broaden my students understanding of this world they live in. I want holidays and traditions to be something we can discuss, learn, and share about in our classroom. The holiday reading pack will allow me to share about different cultures and celebrations throughout our diverse country.
In addition, I love any opportunity to express the importance of character development. The second set of books I am asking for will allow me to teach students about good character and good citizenship in a way that speaks to them.
Lastly, I am requesting a set of fluency readers. In first grade we are constantly feeling the pressure to make students more fluent readers. Our only way of doing that is by handing them a sheet of paper that has a story typed on it. No pictures, just words. I see this as setting them up for failure. These books will help my students practice becoming fluent readers without compromising their love for reading.
Will you help me help my students?
Your donations will allow me to raise my students up with confidence in knowing a little more about the world around them. Without these learning opportunities at school, many of them may not ever experience what these traditions, cultures, character traits, and/or reading habits are.
My students are eager to know more. Thank you for helping me feed their love of reading using these resources.
