My Students

I teach a wonderful group of kindergarten/first-grade students, all with a variety of academic and language goals. One of their shared commonalities is that they absolutely love going to the reading rug with a book and a book buddy. They are always excited when our little library gets new additions. It allows them to explore a different world within the pages of a book. They explore those worlds through touch and feel, reading, and pictures. Their curiosities astound and impress us and extend far beyond just literacy.

The best part of the day is seeing the kids get excited about doing something they love.

Our little learners also love using dot markers for art projects, singing/dancing to their favorite songs, and playing instruments during circle time. All of these activities are also incorporated into their love of literacy!

My goal is to support their curiosity for literacy in a fun and engaging ways, while also allowing them to work on their emergent reading skills. Having new ways for students to work on letters and letter sounds, will only propel them further in their goals.

My Project

Our kindergarten students this year have such a love for books, stories, and interacting with literacy in any way they can. They adore characters like Pete the Cat, Clifford, and anyone from the world of Dr. Seuss. For this project, I chose items that I thought would help support their love of literacy in a fun and meaningful way.

There is a tremendous amount of fun and appropriately leveled books for the students to explore, while also working on their emerging literacy skills.

Our wonderfully diverse group of students would also benefit from items like the Hot Dots activity. There are two different levels, to accommodate all students in our class. The best part is that they get to explore these literacy skills alongside their favorite character, Pete the Cat. With activities, like the "hot dots", students will be given auditory models to help their speech and imitation skills. Using the magnetic letters and all of the CVC word games, students can be aided by visual models to read letters and their sounds. By using other games in this project, students can improve their literacy skills while simultaneously working to strengthen their fine motor skills.

Using everything encompassed in this project, students will have a chance to be emersed in literacy in a fun and exciting ways.
