Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title 1, K-8 Academy. I serve grades 6-8. Approximately 80% of my students come from low income households. My students have a way of amazing me every single day. Each of them is unique in their own way.

They are caring, thoughtful, inspiring, hard-working and bold.

They all come from very diverse backgrounds as we are located in a multicultural area. I find that it is often they do not have books from authors that are as diverse as they are or they cannot relate to the characters of a novel. Many of them do not have any books at home as they have limited resources. It is my responsibility to provide these resources. Please help me in doing so!

My Project

We need diverse books that are related to their cultures, backgrounds, and daily struggles as pre-teens and teenagers. The book shelf, saucer chair, and lamp will create a warm, welcoming, and nurturing environment for reading. These materials will make a difference in my students learning because they will have the opportunity to read novels that they can relate to. They will be able to do so in an environment that is warm and welcoming. It is important to me that my classroom fosters and celebrates diversity. It is also important to me that each of my students feels comfortable when they arrive to my class.

Books have the power to change a life and mold a child into a life-long learner.

I plan on creating my own classroom library in which students can relax and unwind after having completed assignments. They will have a comfortable chair and lamp so that they feel at home in my classroom library.
