I teach advanced English and creative writing to high school students in upstate New York. Like so many communities across the country, our area has endured significant economic and demographic changes over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless, our families and students are resilient, determined, and eager to make the world a better place.
My students are writers and readers who will soon enter the world of college and work.
They want to make their mark in the world and it's my job to prepare them.
My Project
I am the faculty advisor for the Girl Up Club at my high school. We strive to help girls in our building and in our community. One of our ongoing responsibilities is to refill the bathrooms in the building with hygiene and comfort supplies.
Today, we are requesting pocket-size hand sanitizers, barrettes, make-up remover, lip glosses, and laundry wipes.
We will place these items into special boxes in the bathrooms for girls to take as needed.
The items are meant to add a little sunshine to the day. It's been a tough year for everybody. Our students have returned en masse just this week. I want them to know that we have missed them.
More than half of students from low‑income households
