My Students

Greetings! "We are taking the league this year!" Is what you will hear from my Girls' Varsity Basketball team! Our team is comprised of 15 young women of all different races, religions and personalities (of course)! We are a Pre K-8 Title 1 School from Harlem, NY. Many of our amazing students come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced lunch. Our school provides rigorous instruction, fantastic teachers and lots of challenges and discovery! In our school, we focus on the three E's: Excellence, Engagement and Enrichment. Not only do we focus on the three E's for academics but on our sports teams as well. Involving our young, influential teens in positive team building and cooperation, helps build confidence, respect and a sense of camaraderie.

Keeping our girls engaged, basketball builds character.

It shows the value of teamwork, hard work and most importantly leadership. You have to have a tough mentality and high confidence to be a great player. Great work ethic is needed as well. Also, team work! One player cannot win by his/herself. It is a team effort!

My Project

My students need new basketballs, practice pinnies, duffle bags, and a ball cart. My girls are currently practicing with TWO basketballs. That's all the girls' basketballs we have available in our school. We are sharing uniforms with the boys' basketball team as well. We have been making it work as best we can.

Although many of my students do not have a lot of money, sometimes the only activities they can afford to be in are at school.

We have several students who struggle academically, but do excel in sports. We motivate them to do better in the classroom through their involvement in athletics. My girls take pride in their accomplishments and carry it over into their school work. Having practice equipment will boost their confidence to a whole new level!
