My Students

Our bright eyed and curious mind of our students are always eager to learn and create. The students at our school come from an economically disadvantaged homes surrounded by a low-lined homes that are prone to flood.

A vast majority of our student population has been effected by Hurricane Harvey.

But that doesn't stop them. Our school is in heart of Houston, TX, adjacent to Braes Bayou. These curious minds are always eager to learn.

My Project

These materials will make a difference in the students ability to understand the concepts and enrich the lesson. By providing us with the materials such as a pottery wheels, air-dry clay, play-do and clay molding tools the students will learn to manipulate clay in different ways.

Working to create clay arts allows children to explore challenges, solve problems, and learn to recover from their mistakes as they happen.

This lesson will reinforce the tactile experience of clay and critical thinking skills. Sculpting clay is a three-dimensional art, which requires the student to understand spatial awareness. My young students will need to move the form around; and move themselves around the form to see all the sides and examine the shape, form, and perspective of the piece. They wonder: How wide can I make this bowl before it flops? Will this tree stand straight or fall? Should my bird have open or closed wings? I believe working with clay helps children solve problems and learn from their mistakes.

In this unit the students unit complete an unit project. The students will manipulate the clay and create cupcake clay boxes using the coil method to create a 3" coil pot that incorporates a variety of cupcake and dessert styles. The students will make connections with both Wayne Theibaud and the practical uses of creating an artistic functioning pot. I believe my students create art based on their development stages, and the safe environment of a pottery unit lets them grow and develop with great rewards.
