Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is the foundation of education. My kindergarteners have not yet had the opportunity to explore the magical world of reading. With very limited access to nonfiction books, students will not be ready for the future whether it be college or their chosen careers.

My kindergarteners attend a Title I public school with 92% of the students receiving reduced/free lunch.

The majority of the students live under stressful circumstances. Some have no parental figures and others must care for their younger siblings. They do not have school supplies or educational resources to use. The students come in to my classroom with no background knowledge or learning experiences. They come to school with physical, social, emotional, and psychological needs.

My Project

Despite all the hardships my students endure, they are excited about learning in my classroom. I always hear my students say that when they grow up they want to be astronauts, doctors, or policemen. Given the right opportunities and resources, I believe they can be successful in the future. With the two nonfiction book sets by Gail Gibbons, students will have many opportunities to read these stories in our listening center and read along as the narrator speaks. This will increase their text complexity, academic vocabulary, and incorporate their literacy in science. The listening center will enable them to increase their reading comprehension and will allow them to excel throughout their school years. The Science Read-along's will introduce students to the intriguing lives of the world's most fascinating animals. These books will help my kindergarteners augment their reading comprehension and fluency while learning about the life cycles and characteristics of animals like wolves and sharks.

"Footsteps to Reading Success" will help my students integrate reading into science, fostering their oral language through fun listening activities.

Five and six year-old children learn very quickly with the help of audio/visual materials. Students are captivated when learning about animals. With your funding, they will create a love for reading and use their new knowledge to write facts in their science journals. Please help my students become motivated to learn in an exhilarating way!
