My Students

The best place to teach science is outside. My school is located minutes away from an incredible old growth forest. Every six weeks we take a walking field trip to the forest to study a variety of environmental topics.

My students are enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders in an elementary highly capable program.

They are passionate about science and have expressed an interest in studying animal tracks when we go on our field trips to the forest. I would like to respond to this interest but lack the needed supplies.

My Project

The adventure will start by reading the engaging book Wild Tracks! A Guide to Nature's Footprints by Jim Arnosky. The magnifying glasses will be use for observation of actual tracks in the field. Students will carefully document the tracks they find by making detailed sketches. The dimensions of each track will be measured along with the animal's stride. Students will use the reference books to identify their animal and learn more about their habits. Finally, students will use the information they collect on their trips to the forest to design their own poster of animal tracks.

I believe we should be teaching more science in elementary schools, not less.

With your donation I can strengthen my science program, respond to student inquiry and encourage my highly capable students to respect and protect our environment.
