My Students

Studying nutrition for ninth graders can be somewhat complex. This book does a wonderful job of explaining food in terms that teenagers can understand. Teaching young teenagers they key to a healthy diet will aid in total wellness and the quest to end the obesity cycle.

Our students live in a rural area and face many of the same issues that teenagers experience throughout the U.S.

They also have been impacted by the economy and the changing lifestyles of families. Teaching them to understand that we eat for many reasons, understanding what we should eat and how to apply this knowledge to their total wellness is critical. The students in my school have aspirations to succeed and prosper in the 21st century. Many will leave this area due to the geographic location and the lack of job opportunity. When they travel the world, they need to understand that the world is flat and they must have the same knowledge as their peers in other countries.

My Project

I have requested 25 books written by Michael Pollin entitled, The Omnivores Dilemma, the young readers edition. These books are designed to make the students think! This is not rote learning but the application of scientific principles to something they do everyday, eat real food. To be successful in the 21st century requires critical thinking and problem solving. By providing students with information, hopefully their imagination will be stimulated and their natural curiosity will inspire them to go beyond the basics of food.

Teaching the students to read and write effectively is just as important as understanding the basics of health and wellness.

Allowing students to read in every subject teaches them the importance of education as a lifelong endeavor.
