Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
From the first day, students learn that there is no such thing as "bad art." When making art, we make art about ourselves, our communities, and other things that are important to us. Each student has their own talents and pursues creativity their own way.
In the art classroom, students become artists who are constantly questioning their surroundings - and their art responds to these questions.
Our upcoming projects include a food sculpture unit, where students will critique issues of consumerism and climate change by creating a found-object assemblage. The semester will culminate with our second art show, displaying students' self-directed, theme based projects.
My Project
In this unit, students will create food sculptures through the lens of environmentalism. Their projects will be critiquing issues that impact our communities, such as waste, pollution, and consumerism. Their work will serve as commentary on dominant cultural values, mass production, advertisements, and the media.
Throughout the project, students will take an environmentally-conscious approach to their artmaking.
Students will use found objects (trash!) alongside materials like Sculpey and plaster. Additionally, advanced students will use ArtResin, which has less impact on the environment than traditional epoxy resins. They will be encouraged to repurpose as many found or discarded materials in their work as they can.
