My Students

The fifth grade students at our school come from diverse backgrounds within our urban environment. The social and cultural intricacies are rich and dynamic.

The students' eagerness to learn about life within and beyond the borders of an urban environment is exciting!

The richness in their questions and the authenticity of wanting more are evident and shine through their conversations. My goal is to ensure hunger is not an obstacle in the learning process.

My Project

My students live in an area defined as a food desert and have limited access to nutritious and healthy foods. My school provides a USDA-approved nutritious healthy breakfast for our students. Unfortunately, nearly 40% of the food is not immediately eaten and has to be thrown away.

Because it's early, many of my students are not immediately hungry.

Our school is an early start school and students arrive at 7:30 am. This is when breakfast is served. Because it's early, many of my students are not immediately hungry. However, the hunger becomes very evident between 9:00 and 10:00. If we had a refrigerator, we could store the food and even share it with peers who may be hungry later in the morning. We could also donate any extra food at the end of the day to families.
