My Students

My students are from a high-poverty area of Arkansas in the Mississippi Delta. Students often come into my nutrition related classes with preconceived notions of what "healthy" eating entails.

Arkansas has one of the higher obesity rates in the United States, and I believe that being overweight has a direct link to not only poor eating habits in general but specifically to a lack of nutrition information and education.

I would like to have some supplemental materials in my classroom that will help strengthen the healthy eating habits and nutrition information that I am trying to teach my students.

My Project

There is so much confusing nutrition information in the media today that it can be hard to know what information is reliable and what is not. If students have access to simple reliable information, they can make more informed and healthy food choices. The book Food Rules is easy to read and understand and its content is very applicable to everyday life.

With a body fat analyzer my students can see that their weight is more than a number on a scale.

They can begin to understand that there is much more to health than appearance. They may see that a person can be overfat and have a normal weight, which will help students see another reason healthy eating habits are so important.
