My Project

Food preservation is an important skill to know, and there are countless methods to put up food for the long term. The supplies found in this project will help me teach my students the various ways to preserve food without refrigeration. The propane burner will be used with our pressure canner to preserve meats and low acid vegetables like corn and green beans. We do not have winter here, but learning how to preserve food for the pantry comes in very handy in case the electricity goes out and the freezers and refrigerators are not available.

Pressure canning, food saving, and water glassing eggs using the pickling lime are just a few techniques I will teach my students about food preservation.

The frying pot and basket will make having our tilapia fish fry much easier. We will even be able to make hush puppies and fried okra. I have found that the more "unusual" the lessons I do with my students, the more excited they get to come to class. If I can pique their interests by teaching them the things I know and enjoy, then it becomes a win-win situation for us all.
