Food Justice: No More Growling Stomachs or Minds Project

My students need 60 copies of the book Hungry, a story about a dystopia where food no longer exists because scientists have figured out a way to sustain people without it.

My Students

My students have been engaging in a year-long study about food justice. Living in a food desert they are beginning to question who controls what they eat and the way our food supply system is structured the way it is. They are curious to learn more!

I teach 6th graders in East New York.

We are a new STEAM school and we serve an impoverished community. Our students are diverse and come to us reading several grades below grade level. With that being said, they are eager to learn, creative, outgoing and work hard every day. They continue to blow my mind with how they are able to set aside difficult challenges in their lives outside the classroom and come in and push themselves to the next level each day. It's exciting to see them take risks and have those "ah-ha" moments. I'm so excited to see their continued growth throughout the year and the passion projects they take on in our final unit!

My Project

Our students have researched and selected this text after reading two related books: Chew on This and Omnivore's Dilemma. They selected Hungry because it is a novel and they love that this piece of fiction has to do with the themes we have been discussing throughout the year (ie: access to fresh food, corporate/government control, scientific advances in food production, etc.) After they selected the novel I read it first and agreed it was, in fact, the perfect book for our unit on narratives. My only hope is that we can get it funded quickly so we can have the books by mid-February when we are slated to start the unit. The students will use these novels to lead book clubs and Socratic discussions. They will also use this to inspire their own narrative piece of writing that will be aligned to our study of food justice. And lastly they will use both the book and their narrative writing piece to create a piece of performance art related to the year-long theme of food justice.

By donating these books we will use them for years to come.

They align perfectly with our 6th grade curriculum which is centered around food justice. By reading, writing and discussing this issue, our students are building prior knowledge and motivation to address this need within our own community. We are located in a "food desert" so it is imperative that we help students to become aware of why there are limited healthy food options and how they can make better choices about what they eat.
