Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a special education teacher at a transition center for students with disabilities aged 18-22 in Chicago, Illinois. Our program provides our clients with vocational training and independent living skills, as well as community-based instruction. Our school has campuses located in the South Loop and in Portage Park. I am in my third year teaching at the latter and have been working for Chicago Public Schools in various roles since 2017.

I would like to set up a food bank in my classroom to allow my students to take home food to their families once a week.

In addition to supporting our students' families—of which nearly 90% are low-income—this food will also be used in our occupational lab to teach cooking skills. While this will primarily benefit the students on my caseload, any leftover food will be offered to the rest of the students at our school.
