My Students

I have an amazing group of kids! They are in a self-contained autism class that offers them the individualized attention they need. They have very diverse backgrounds and learn in unique ways. The students in my classroom are mostly non-verbal visual learners. They come from low socio-economic areas in the inner city of New York. My students may not have the same access to materials as other students, but that shouldn't stop them from getting the same education and exposure to the same material.

My Project

I have a wonderful class with 6 students. Each of the students in our classroom are diagnosed with Autism. Even though they may not be able to verbalize their needs, we can see them clearly. One of the biggest needs in our classroom is for food and drinks.

Many of our students come to school hungry and thirsty.

How can we expect our students to learn when they are thinking about how hungry and thirsty they are. As we give the students task to complete they point and sign food or request water. If we were able to supply them with these basics then they would be able to better complete the tasks they are given.

Another reason for the edibles is for reinforcement. Many of our students need constant reinforcements to learn appropriate behaviors. These small frequent edibles show the students that they will be reinforced for doing the right thing and will increase the appropriate behavior. These simple snacks and reinforcements can change the students lives!
