Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I service students with a variety of speech/language disabilities at a Bronx public school in a high-needs district. Although they come from a low socioeconomic background, I strive to ensure that my students know that they are fully capable of learning and growing.
I make it a point to empower them with the idea that they can learn anything if they pay close attention to their surroundings, use their brains to think/wonder, and put hard work/effort into all that they do.
I love that my speech students are always eager to come to their speech therapy sessions. My students are encouraged to take risks with their language and they are taught that mistakes and struggle is part of learning and growing. They love to explore therapy materials, especially those that stimulate the senses, and those that involve role play and co-operative play. They also love to sing songs, learn through movement, and to manipulate their vocal volume and intonation.
My Project
Many of my students come to school hungry and do not like the breakfast and/or lunch options provided by the school. I would like to be able to provide them with alternatives to ensure that they have the energy they need to stay focused throughout the school day.
Whenever my students are hungry, the signs are clear--they complain of headaches, show signs of irritability, and struggle to focus during instruction and when completing tasks.
I always have some small snack handy for them to have, but having a variety of snacks handy can be costly. I know they would be grateful to have a variety of snacks choices whenever they are in need of something to fill their bellies or for a quick energy boost when they are feeling sluggish and tired.
