My Students
I teach fifth grade reading in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma! My students are a diverse group with varied levels. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn, but in a non-traditional way. We are a Title One school with the majority of our students receiving free lunches. These kids have the biggest hearts you'll ever come across. Every single one of my students has integrity, compassion, and a positive attitude. They are truly amazing people. My school is wonderfully supportive of the project-based learning that we do in our classroom. I couldn't ask for a better environment for these students. We are truly a community!
My Project
My students need a Sony Full HD Action Cam and guided reading books that focus on the environment such as A Long Walk to Water, Kenya's Art, Mama Miti: Wangari Maathai and the Trees of Kenya, and Rachel Carson to connect our environmental projects to our daily lives. In our reading class, we read novels that inspire our creativity, but also challenge us to do something to make our world a better place. So far, we have adopted a gorilla from Africa, served our homeless community, and partnered with the Children's Craniofacial Association.
Now, we want to expand our service projects with the book A Long Walk to Water.
This is a story of hope and survival, telling the story of Salva Dut, an original Lost Boy from Sudan. Our project will begin with the book, and then expand as we research Sudan, create a timeline of the story, analyze the challenges in sanitation, distribution and conservation of water, and and learn of the plight of the Sudanese Refugees. Then, we will create a plan and budget to raise funds and save money for the Water for Sudan project, founded by original Lost Boy, Salva Dut. We will use the video camera to document our projects, conduct interviews and create a presentation to share with other students. We will use the guided reading books to connect environmental issues around the world to our project.
My students have grown each year as we have made "real world" connections with our novels. Through our service projects, they have found ways to be generous, and open their hearts to help others. The students will learn of true courage, and the importance of hope as they journey with Salva through his story. We can help transform lives!
