My Students

My classroom is made up of twenty-one students. Eighteen receive free lunch and live in impoverished areas. Thirteen students have been previously retained, four have learning disabilities, four are receiving interventions through our RTI program, and three have severe medical problems. One student has stage two kidney disease, another has lupus and adolescent arthritis, and the third has a vision disability and must use special devices to read and see things at a distance. Although these students all come with various backgrounds, have different struggles, both academically and physically, they have an enthusiasm for learning that is contagious!

Our school is an arts based school that allows these students to engage in learning through a variety of ways, including through visual and performing arts.

They do not have the life experiences or books that help them to always understand the content, but through the use of the arts and integration of reading and writing they can be successful!

My Project

We will do an arts integrated author study using various texts written by Patricia Polacco. This unit will integrate reading, writing, and visual art standards. Students will work in whole group, small groups, with partners, and independently. She tells of her life's journeys growing up through the beautiful language and illustrations in her books. We will create collages using textures like she does in some of her illustrations, create our own class "Keeping Quilt", and write personal narratives that describe our favorite memories. This unit will help the students to see themselves as writers, develop the craft of writing, and express their learning through the arts.
