Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are active learners. They love being involved in all aspects of their education. They ask questions, think through problems, and are good team mates. They care about each other and will look out for each other in class and out on the yard. My students work hard every day to meet the challenges set before them in the classroom. They are excited about art, love to learn with music, and can't wait to participate in deep discussions. My students make me want to give them the best I can because they are thrilled to learn every day.
My Project
My sixth graders study Middle Eastern and Asian ancient people every year. The students learn about the culture and religion of the ancient people they and it can be hard for my students to understand the societal rules, gender roles, and religious beliefs of these people groups. It is also very hard for students from Middle East and Asian immigrant families to share their culture and beliefs with their friends because they feel misrepresented in the classroom.
I want to use picture books to help the students from the nations we study to feel like they are being correctly represented in the classroom.
This will open up opportunity for honest dialogue without students from the Middle East and Asia feeling judged or misunderstood by their American counterparts. I hope to help my students realize that they have more in common with each other than they thought. Some of the books in this project include, The True Story of Noah's Ark, Lady White Snake: A Tale from Chinese Opera, Grandfather Gandhi, and The Little Book of Hindu Deities, just to name a few!
