This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Mindfulness matters, now more than ever, especially among students whose social and emotional development has been affected by the world around them, both at home and at school. My students are reaching out for help more than ever before and find the outside world a challenging and stressful place where they feel out of control. When provided with an environment where they feel safe enough to express their feelings, they are better equipped to regulate their emotions and be successful in school. Now, more than ever, I see students reaching out for help to navigate their feelings and work through their problems, but this openness requires trust and a safe space.

With this project, my hope is to provide an environment designed for controlling sensory stimulation with curtain lights and a fish tank, and resources such as books and story boards, designed to help them express themselves appropriately.

These resources will provide a safe, calming yet engaging environment for counseling sessions to occur for students to express themselves, interact and bond with their peers and counselor, and form stronger relationships they’ll carry into everyday life.
