My Students

I( am a Resource teacher and my students come and go throughout the day. Many of them have attention/sensory issues. But, once I get their attention, each and everyone of them can learn. I am always looking for ways to feed their attention and sensory needs so they can concentrate on learning.

I work in a low income school.

We have many students identified with Special Needs. I teach students with ASD, Learning Disabilities and ADHD .The students struggle to learn and manage their disability in a fast paced, rigorous curriculum. They are making strides but need some "out of the box" strategies to give them that "edge". In my time as Resource Teacher, I have been able to assist in weaning a few students off of Resource help. I'd like to increase that number. Because of attention and sensory needs, some of my students are too distracted by their bodies to learn or show what they learn in typical paper and pencil assignments. They are so proud when they accomplish something, I'd like to give them more opportunities to succeed.

My Project

With these materials, Resource time will be used more efficiently to teach students academic strategies to access the grade level curriculum. All the items I have selected can be used during all instructional content. They can sit on these items or fidget with hands and feet while learning. With more focus on academic content, the students will learn more. If they more, they will be able to be more successful on performance tasks like projects and tests. I selected these items to give everyone "more bang for their buck" as these items have the flexibility to be used in a variety of settings across the curriculum.

With school funding dwindling in my district--especially for Special Needs students--I am not able to spend enough of my personal funds to supplement adequately what the district gives me.

With this project funded, I can use the materials for many years to come so more of my students can successfully access the general education curriculum. I hope to "graduate" them from services by middle school so learning is comfortable instead of a struggle between their mind and body
