This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Perhaps the most anticipated unit in our early college biology course is zoology. In past iterations of this class, we strongly emphasized invertebrates and mammals, due to relatively easy access to materials for these animal groups. This year, we're looking to broaden the scope of our zoology unit by expanding to some of the other main groups of vertebrates. We have been able to acquire dissection materials to cover amphibians, mammals, fish and, thanks to a previous DonorsChoose project, reptiles for this school year. Our original plan to obtain bird specimens fell through, so I'm hoping to give it another go and add our final group of vertebrates to the collection.
Our students love animal dissections because often internal anatomy doesn't seem "real" until they are able to experience it firsthand.
Invertebrate dissections are great tools to introduce anatomical exploration, but our students get extremely excited for vertebrate dissections because they get to check out organ systems that are similar to our own.
In the last portion of this unit, students will work in groups to deep-dive into the anatomy, physiology, and ecology of one vertebrate animal group, before engaging in a comparative anatomy project share with their classmates. The main goal is for students to become experts on a group of animals and present their findings to their peers, which includes performing the quintessential dissection lab they expect in a college-level biology course.
