We spend most of our day practicing reading and reading skills. Most whole group instruction is spent with skills such as comprehension. Fluency and accuracy is a skill that needs much practice in order to better comprehend. At the end of the year, I want my students to be reading on grade level.
Many students in my classroom are struggling readers.
Reading is a skill that they do not find fun. Most students act out during reading time in an attempt to get out of work and learning. Many students come from homes that can not support academic needs, so often times, what they have access to in school is all these students have. It is important to me as an instructional coach to be able to vary instruction so that each child can benefit. Being in a financially struggling district makes it difficult to have materials to vary instruction and reach all learners. Our school just purchased new curriculum materials in a an effort to improve learning and student achievement. As a result of this budget expense, there is little money to order extras. As a priority school, we have an expectation to improve student achievement in all areas.
These fluency materials will be used in small cooperative learning groups. The students will use the whisper phones and recording microphones as they read passages and practice fluency. The small group setting as well as they fun and leveled learning materials will make practicing reading more appealing to these struggling readers. As they use these materials each day, they will be able to increase fluency and accuracy. As they students increase fluency, they will be able to read as well as comprehend grade level material better, thus increasing student achievement.
The donations in my project will improve my classroom by allowing more opportunity for small group learning and hands on activities.
Using these materials will allow students to hear their own reading as well as provide continuous opportunities for practice. Becoming more efficient readers will allow my students to become more successful in future grades as well increase achievement on standardized assessments they take each year.
