My Students

Imagine for a moment being one of the slowest readers in the classroom. Imagine that you are also an English language learner and you are trying to master the language as you learn to read. This is a reality for many students in my classroom. We are in need of materials to help build fluency.

The connection between reading speed and comprehension; a film is made up of still images flashed in rapid succession to simulate movement.

Slow down the film, and the movement and meaning slows and the film's impact is diminished. Viewers won't learn as much about the film as if it were shown at normal speed. With reading the same thing can happen. When a person reads word by word, like frame by frame, they are not reading on the level of ideas. You need to read on some level that's more conversational and allows things to coalesce into ideas themselves." - Doug Evans, Institute of Reading Development My class is comprised of general education, special education, and ESL students. Some come from homes filled to the brim with books and technology. Most of them come from homes with only the most basic of necessities. Many of my students need not only a boost in their skills, but in their confidence as well. I believe the materials I am requesting for them will do both.

My Project

Fluency matters - A LOT! Without fluency reading loses meaning. Students who struggle with fluency, struggle in school, in reading in the early grades, but later this affects all subject areas. Many of my students struggle with fluency mightily. I know that these recorders will not only help with their fluency but MOTIVATE them to read as well. They will be able to read a book into a microphone into the computer (what second grader would not love that?), and then listen to themselves and record their time. They can then work to increase their reading rate and expression. They can do all of this without the embarrassment of reading in front of the class. As their confidence begins to soar, they can then use the sound station they can play their best reading back to their friends. They would also be able to use the sound station to record partner reading, readers theater, etc. I know that this would GREATLY increase my students motivation towards working on fluency.

I am no different. More than anything, I want my students to leave my classroom as CONFIDENT and SUCCESSFUL readers. I truly believe that these materials will help my students build fluency, which in turn will help increase comprehension, and motivation to read.
