My Project

Compassion for others comes in many shapes and forms. In our classroom, our love language is being able to share our flowers and vegetables and herbs with our school 'ohana (family) and members of our community as well. In past projects, we have grown vegetables and shared them with the people at our school. We also cook food on Fun Food Fridays and feed whoever wants to try what we have prepared. Being able to share the bounty is one of the ways we try to combat food insecurity at our school. Eventually we want to be able to provide fresh produce to our Wildcat Corner Store that provides free resources to anyone that needs it at our high school.

Through learning about the importance of healthy food and food practices, people will grow to have compassion over the land they are working with as well, which in turn will create a stronger sense of community.

Being able to share cut flower bouquets and bags of leafy greens with families that need it will enable my students to understand how they can help their fellow classmates because you never know who might need a helping hand. Gardens can deeply grow compassion if we are open to learning from the natural world. From being in the garden, we can learn profound lessons in patience, interdependence, care, and compassion. We will use the space to learn to imagine different relationships and boundaries with each other and the land. I want my students to become dependable and compassionate stewards of the land and kind to everyone they come into contact with.
